How a lasting exterior job is done

Exterior painting lives and dies by preparation and timing. The painter will usually start by washing the walls down — a thorough power-wash to strip off years of dirt, moss, salt residue and any loose or flaking paint, because new paint over a dirty or unstable surface simply won't hold. Cracks in the render are cut out and filled, moss and algae are treated, and bare or chalky patches are stabilised with the right primer or sealer.

Weather is the other half of the job. On the west coast you need a dry window and walls that have had time to dry out after rain, so a good painter watches the forecast and works with it rather than against it. Coatings go on in the right conditions, usually two coats of a breathable masonry paint, so the finish bonds properly and lasts for years rather than months. Trim, doors and windows are cut in by hand for sharp lines, and everything — paths, drives, glass and planting — is protected while the work is underway.
